Leaving England

There were two of us on this trip. Me and Nigel. The trip was my baby and I'd researched it exhaustively although there wasn't much information available on the internet or elsewhere. It just seemed a romantic thing to do - a pilgrimage. I dipped into Hillaire Belloc's "Path to Rome" but found it quite hard going. Maps were a problem. I managed to get hold of a large scale map for the first week but only had a road map for the second week that would take us through Lazio towards Rome.

We flew from Coventry to Rome Ciampino and from there caught trains into Rome and then on to Siena. We found a hotel in Siena, a former convent. The view from our room was of the bell tower of the Duomo.
